The Role
We are looking for a motivated and committed individual to join our Land Surveying teams, based out of either our Edinburgh or Newcastle offices. The role will however involve a mixture of fieldwork, office work and potentially some home working, depending on workload and other influences.
You’ll be joining an established environmental and engineering consultancy who put sustainability and resilience to climate change at the heart of our company strategy. With offices in nine countries around the world and across the UK and Ireland, we like to think we make a difference. We are independent and employee-owned allowing us the freedom to focus on innovation and our commitment to exceptional client service. Our workforce is central to our success, and we invest heavily in supporting staff development. We are great people to work for. Visit https://www.jbaconsulting.com/ to find out more about what we do.
Your role
The role will include a mixture of carrying out detailed topographical surveys / river cross sections / asset surveys, as well as then processing of the field data. This will involve establishing safe systems of working, assessing potential risk, liaising with clients / stakeholders / internal JBA Project Managers, as well as also establishing control networks, carrying out detail surveys and supervising more junior members of the survey team. The survey processing will be through a number of different software packages, including TBC, LSS, AutoCAD and QGIS. The deliverables will support works in relation to on-going engineering design.
The team member we’re looking for
The nature of the job will involve working outside a lot, in sometimes unpleasant weather. Locations will often involve working in or near water, therefore confidence in and around water will be important. Flexibility will be needed as there may be the need to work outside of normal working hours and staying away from home during the week will be a common requirement. Generally, the ability to adapt to varied and different working environments is important.
Qualifications
We would expect that applicants will have a formal qualification that included Land Surveying within its syllabus, or alternatively, equivalent land surveying experience working in the UK.
Essential attributes for the role
Candidates must have the following:
• Proven land surveying capability, with sufficient experience to lead topographical detail surveys / river cross section surveys both safely and professionally.
• Competent in the use of both GNSS and Total Station survey equipment.
• Excellent IT skills, including AutoCAD, GIS and standard MS Office programmes, as well as a recognised surveying processing software i.e. TBC, LSS, or equivalent.
• A current driving licence, to permit unsupervised driving in the UK.
• To be able to effectively carry out fieldwork which often involves being on your feet most of the day.
• A willingness to travel throughout the UK, and to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
Desirable attributes for the role
You will be able to demonstrate that you are able to:
• Work proactively and be able to work independently and unsupervised.
• Take responsibility for own work and that of the survey team you lead.
• Provide a sound understanding of health & safety and best practice standards relating to Land Surveying.
• Demonstrate effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Location and contact
JBA supports hybrid working which provides for greater flexibility with the way that we work.
The role will be located at our Edinburgh office within the Heriot Watt Research Park, home to Edinburgh’s largest science park. Presenting a unique way in which to learn and work, the office is surrounded by green space and provides free general parking and secure bike storage. Approximately seven miles from central Edinburgh and situated within the University campus, the office is well positioned in relation to the main transport networks, including the nearby Hermiston Gate Park and Ride where you will find the nearest EV charging facilities, for those travelling by road.
