We are seeking an enthusiastic Geotechnical Engineer with proven consultancy experience in geotechnical engineering design to join our existing team. The successful candidate will report to our Geotechnical Technical Director and provide geotechnical input to civil/structural engineering projects across the JBA business. We have opportunities across several office locations but would be particularly keen for applications to be based in our Haywards Heath or Portsmouth offices.

Your role
Our workload is primarily focused on coastal and flood risk management projects, that involve a full life cycle of geotechnical involvement from desk studies, planning and supervising GIs, ground modelling to undertaking concept to detailed designs. Our design focus includes gravity and embedded retaining walls, foundation designs/piling, coastal protection structures such as groynes, breakwaters, and rock armour revetments in a dynamic coastal environment. Our engineers work within multi-disciplinary project teams helping us to find the most economic and sustainable design solutions. In addition to the flood risk management work, we also provide support to Network Rail and various local authorities in relation to slope stability investigation and design for road and rail infrastructure.
The main aspects of the role include:
• Delivery of a range of flood risk engineering and environmental improvement projects, including soil-structure interactions.
• Geotechnical modelling for retaining walls, slopes, piling and foundations.
• Geotechnical design and designers risk assessment.
• Ground investigation planning and supervision.
• Ground Model assessment, writing geotechnical interpretative and design reports, construction specification for piling & retaining walls/ earthworks.
• Finite element modelling skills would be desirable (but not essential).
The team member we’re looking for
We are looking for an individual who has consultancy experience in the UK, with knowledge of geotechnical design and analysis for Flood and Coastal Risk Management projects. It is expected that the role will involve a significant degree of cross team working, involve collaboration with clients and supply chain and involve mentoring and professional development of junior staff.
Qualifications
A degree (or equivalent) in civil or geotechnical engineering is essential. The right candidate is expected to progress towards, or already hold, membership of the ICE or other appropriate institutions.
Essential attributes for the role
• Proven design consultancy experience.
• Experience of working in a client-focussed organisation.
• Effective report writing and communication skills.
• A sound appreciation for engineering principles and good analytical skills for problem solving.
• Self-motivation and a high degree of organisation.
• Ability to interpret sound ground model/s and produce geotechnical designs with minimal supervision. Experience in slope stability, foundations and retaining wall designs. Working knowledge of industry software Wallap, GeoStudio SlopeW, SeepW, Settle or equivalent.
Demonstrable experience of geotechnical design and numerical modelling with a variety of design packages is considered essential, in particular PLAXIS 3D/2D.
Desirable attributes for the role
Experience using WALLAP and GeoStudio or similar retaining wall design and slope stability/seepage software would be of interest. Site experience including Ground Investigations, Asset management and/or construction supervision would be beneficial.
